Rob Magnolia City Food Pick . . .The Future and the Continuity of the Past

March 13, 2014, Robinson's Magnolia held an activity for social media users and what an activity it was!  It was not only a tour of the different food establishments of the mall but also an inside look on how the new  project Robinson's residence is.

The Residence:

The new Rob residence project is simply a joy to behold and have. It's to be turned over within the year (Tower B) and the rest in the next few years (Tower C is at 2015). The project is located exactly Between 2 cities , Quezon City and City of San Juan: a stone's throw away from Makati City and a little role going to the old business sector of the City of Manila. Near a university, some churches and with quick routes going to hospitals, who would not go for this place.

Each tower is styled with two units, may it be a single room or a 2-roomed units, built for your personal need.

The Food Pick:
This is one establishment with a good range of food selection for everyone. From vegetarian dishes to that of meals for the kids and kids at heart. This is a one stop shop for food lovers. Robinson's Marketing team, along with Mercato decided to treat a selective group of social media practitioner to a food experience to remember. From light meals to sweet treats, this food tour is worth sharing to the reading public.

C'verde by Big Chill
From your normal healthy fruit drinks, Big Chill has finally came out with a food line Maintaining its healthy image. This is an off-shoot from Cafeteria Verde, Manila's first vegetarian restaurant. From appetizers, to rice meals, sandwiches and pizza to pasta. You name it and they have it in their menu and you are assured that it is meat-free. Something that vegetarians, living healthy and adventurous people would enjoy. Being a meat lover myself, the Bean and Cheese Taquitos with Sour cream dip  was a treat indeed! The crunch of the taquitos with the smoothness of the cheddar cheese and beans blended well. The sour cream dip was smooth in texture and rich in flavor.

Zigla!
Thinking about calories? Then this is the place for you. Zigla has 3 pre-set food categories: rice pasta and classic, and their main priority is to serve you food with 300 calories or less. With sandwiches made from whole wheat loaf, 0% sugar and spreads made from healthy ingredients with your calorie count in mind, who would not enjoy their meal.

Pad Thai and more!
A mistake to make when eating their dish is simply taking it as it is. Ask for spices and lime! Their signature Chicken Pad Thai  has the classic texture similar to any pad thai in the market. Crunchy bean sprouts, rightly cooked noodles; when mixed with spices and sprinkled with lime. .. The taste! It became a pad thai worthy of your time.

House of Silvanas

You see them in the malls in the metropolis. A small home business now grown and loved by nearly all due to their signature product . . . SILVANAS.   That pastry with a soft crunch. That sweet, but not over bearing butter cream. What a delight to consume them. Personally, I could eat a box full of this due to the consistency of flavor that each piece carries. From classic flavors, they now have additional flavors such as strawberry, pandan, ube and mango. New flavors to enjoy with the classic House of Silvanas. Their touch and trademarks in each piece. .. consistency of flavors.

Did you think that all is done? We already had an appetizer, a noodle dish and a dulce  but there is more to this food tour. This is but the first part of it. The team who created this activity planned it well. We, the social media practitioners, would also get a look of the mall itself. With wide aisle and perfect lighting, this mall is a delight to shop at and visit. You could even do the tango while you're there. THAT IS SPACE DEFINED.

81 years of heritage
Back to the food tour. Did you know that chocolate, being a delightful flavor that is, can be used as a palate cleanser? With the right amount of chocolate and additional flavors, your taste buds would be cleansed of the other flavors that you had and make you ready for new things to taste and enjoy. This is what I discovered when introduce to Villa del Conte . It is a chocolate shop / kiosk filled with both classic and innovative chocolate creations. Being true to their 81 years of heritage in making fine chocolate treats, this establishment is sure to stay for years to come. The Chocolate Hazelnut treat mix is a classic that still holds true to its rich and remarkable flavors. What is new is the watermelon  chocolate . You taste the sweet chocolate then that distinct watery flavor that a watermelon fruit is known for. You think, I am pulling your leg? Go and get a piece and experience that delightfully different chocolate treat. You will not forget it.

Their creations

Every now and then, we get to have that impulse of getting comfort food. It may vary from one person to the next but the definition of comfort food is still the same. Food that will give you a smile by the end of the day.  Food that will boost you when you are feeling down. That is what The Clubhouse  is all about.
They served us Vigan Longganisa Hash, Hungarian Sausage and Eggs, Truffle Mushroom Scramble and Tuyo Rice Bowl.  Everything was delicious but I fell in love with two items in their repertoire.
Tuyo Rice Bowl
For true-bred Filipinos, tuyo is one food that everyone already had a taste of. For those who are not familiar with tuyo, it is a small fish cured in salt. Normally the dish is served in a bowl with rice, infused with herbs and garlic, topped with sunny-side up and fine slices of tuyo. And ask them to make your sunny-side up with a runny yolk. Trust me on this one. How to eat this? Simply dig in! No rules! Let the yolk run and mix with the rice; that way you will have that egg flavor in every bite. If you can ask for their salsa, go ask for it. It is a mixture of tomatoes and pineapples. Its the perfect side dish palate cleanser!

Habla espanol? No? No hay problema porque hablando en espanol no es necesario en este restaurante.   Its the food that you want, right? And loving food is a worldwide language on its own.   Gaucho  is a two-level Argentinian restaurant that serves meat cooked slowly using a pit. Yes, a cooking pit inside a restaurant in a mall. You get to see the pit and the slabs of meat being cooked for your entertainment. Let me correct myself, not just a slab of meat but a whole suckling pig to be exact and times. Meat cooked "a la cruz" style and the Argentinian version of a chimchurri plus red wine of your choice and you have a delightful meal for the night. We were treated to Falda a la Cruz (U.S. beef short plate) a la Cuz Cochino (suckling pig), Cordero a la Cruz (Australian young lamb)  along with 3 chimcurri selections to augment our meal. All the meat was tender and flavorful. My favorite, the U.S. beef plate, also known as the Falda a la Cruz . Here is a tip:  when eating lamb,  eat it with one of their chimchurri. Simultaneously eat the eggplant chimcurri with that of the lamb and you have a meat full of flavors.  The zucchini is so refreshing; zucchini + apple cider vinegar  + sugar = one light refreshing side dish.

To cap the night is a visit to the past. To those born in the 70's till 90's, you would remember that big (yes it was considered big at that time) building along Aurora Boulevard that sells and creates ice cream. Besides the manufacturing part of it, it also has a shop where you could dine and enjoy those and now known as classic creations such as ice cream parfaits and banana split. I am talking of The Magnolia Ice Cream House.
With new signature creations such as Merry-go-round, Thor and Batman, along with the classic such as  Banana Split and Halo-Halo , this establishment is here to stay. During the creation of the mall and the condo, this disappeared for a time. For someone who had good memories of this place and considered it as a landmark or institution already in the ice cream industry, I feel saddened when i heard that it was taken down. Knowing that it is back, I am assured that the new generation will now experience what I would call something worth remembering when you go old. During our stay, I would say I did justice to one of their creations. The Merry-go-round  is an ice cream creation with crepe, served in a parfait glass, sprinkled with candy sprinkle and fruit loops. Forget about calories and sugar; this is ice cream we are talking about! I enjoyed it, consumed it and licked it clean by the end of the tour.

The whole experience. . .
True to say that when there is a mall, food establishments would be part of it but you would never have a mall with a touch of history in it. That is what Robinson's Magnolia is all about. One step to the future and a rich history to boot. They may have the original building removed but they recreated it by maintaining the original look and charm of the ice cream parlor. The mall is something that is set to last and be part of the future. The residence project carries the standard quality of Robinson's. As a whole, the food tour is worth of my time and experience. Something above, under and beyond the rainbow.
