Food Review: Dimsum Place @ Fisher Mall, Value-For-Your-Money Food Place

Located inside the Fisher Mall in Quezon City, Dimsum Place is one Chinese Restaurant that is easy in the pocket and in the eyes.  The whole place is lit right and the seating space is quite right also.

For the food that they offer, the price is set right; a real value for your money set-up.

From the standard dimsum offerings that they have, they also serve rice meals, congees and pastries that are either savory or sweet, depending to your liking.  I was able to try out 3 of their dumplings, 3 of their pastry offerings, 2 of their congees and some of their new offerings; all this made possible because to a foodie meet-up.

Xiao Long Bao

Though the wrapping is not delicate as the way it should be, their Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumpling) is still something to try out.  Best eaten while it is freshly served, so that you get that warmth of the soup inside the said dumpling.

Their Sliced Pork with Century Egg Congee is also a winner in terms of the flavor that it has.  This is one congee offering that is flavored right.  No need to add any flavorings.  The Pork Ball Congee is another matter.  Think of your regular congee with meatballs and that is what you have.  The flavor in the meatball is something that I am familiar with for it reminds me of the meatballs that I grew up with at home.

Though there were some food offerings that I can't really try out due to medical reasons, I still can say that it was good for the company that I was with enjoyed it (Hacao, Pork & Shrimp Siomai, Steamed Rice Role with Shrimps).  I may not be able to taste it but visually that is another matter.  It seems that the Rice Role and that of the wrappings for the Hacao is a little thick - just my opinion on things.

Hacao (Top), Xiao Long Bao (Mdl),
Pork & Shrimp Siomai (Btm)

The pastry line is something that I would like to share to you.  The Baked Taro Bun, Golden Cake and Pork Barbecue Bun are somethings that you have to try.  Let me start with the savory bun; it is a little bit confusing for me because of the flavor levels that it has.  The bun has sweetness that is a bit overpowering for my taste.  The pork inside is not that salty to counter the sweetness of the bread and doesn't have that barbecue taste that you would expect from something that has barbecue in its name.  For me, it is not barbecue flavor but asado.  True that true asado is technically sweet sauced meat but somehow a slightly spiced asado flavor is what I got.

Pork Barbecue Bun

Golden Cake

Baked Taro Bun
The Baked Taro Bun and Golden Cake are more of the sweet side of things.  The bread in the taro is light and airy.  It has a sweet glaze on top that somehow has a light fruity flavor.  My concern with this food offering is the amount of taro cream inside.  It is not equal to the bread; which I think makes it light and not that filling in the stomach.  The Golden Cake is like your butchi made flat.  The bread is similar to that of a steamed bun (siopao) covered with sesame seeds similar to the fore mentioned sweet treat (butchi).

One of their new food offering is the Pork Chop Plate (the other new offering is the Pork Ball Congee).  It is soft and flavored right.   It comes with a sauce but the flavor is not Asian to my palate.  My take on this dish, create your own dipping sauce to keep it truly Asian.

As an additional treat, we had the Stewed Milk Jelly Puff.  It is nothing like any puff pastry that you have encountered.  The puff pastry is the covering crust.  Inside the ramekin, underneath the crust is your stewed milk jelly.  You have to break the crust and make sure that you get to mix it well with the jelly.  It is one lightly entertaining treat.

Dining here is nice.  They have a good number of food offerings to choose from and all of them are priced right; a true value-for-your-money food place in the area of Quezon City.

Food Review: KUMPARES ng Munti at San Pedro, Simpleng Kainan na Babalikan

Pares - often called beef pares, is a braised beef dish that originated in the Philippines. It is particularly associated there with small neighborhood restaurants

If you are looking for something that is right to your budget but at the same time stomach filling, then looked no further if you are here in the southern part of the metro for you have Kumpares.

Located in Las Pinas, Muntinlupa and San Pedro Laguna, as far as I knew, this is your place to be when you only have Php 55.00 in your pocket and wishes to have a full stomach.

Yup!  They have unlimited fried rice if you order a pares meal.

Sisig-Sinangag-Itlog
(non-unli/refillable rice option)

They have a good selection of pares meals to choose from.  May chicken, may pork, may dimsum, tokwa’t baboy, seafood, bagnet at bulalo . .

Beef Mami
(Php 39.00)

Bulalo Pares
(see the marrow!)

Meron na ba akong paborito?  A must try is their Bulalo Pares and Dinuguan!  You get to see the marrow when they serve the Bulalo Pares; something that the Muntinlupa and the one near Landayan branch/franchised store in San Pedro City Laguna tries to ensure.  The beef is soft that you can comfortably chew on it.  Their Dinuguan has that right blend of vinegar, pork blood and spice that I simply fell in love with it!  Though hindi sya nasa unli/refillable rice category, I still love it and will continue ordering it!  I won’t say it is the best Dinuguan (pork blood stew) in the market BUT it is worth your time and palate to try their version of pork blood stew.  Some may ask if it is better than that being served from a well known and endorsed fastfood chain; my answer would be an honest-to-goodness smile.

Dinuguan
(Php 55.00 with one serving of rice)
Besides the normal fair, they also have an UNLIMITED SAGO’T GULAMAN for the price of Php 25.00 only!  The glass that they use is the typical one used for halo-halo (as shown in the picture below).  Since it is refillable, you can drown yourself in their pearls, gelatins, sweet liquid (arnibal/samalamig) and pinipig (if available).

Pares Meal with Refillable Sago't Gulaman
I cannot say how the other store fare in terms of service and food quality, but one thing I can assure you is that you will have the same quality of those a fore mentioned in Muntinlupa City and that of the one near Landayan, San Pedro City of Laguna since the franchisee is the same.   With this two branches, you are assured that the pares broth is served hot - comfortably consumable hot. Since it is a franchised business, do expect some small difference when trying out the other stores.

Muntinlupa location

The only drawback, no wi-fi service.  But then again, you are there to eat and not do your social media "duties".

Kumpares is a 24 hours food place.  If you are looking for something to eat besides the regular food available in a convenient store in the middle of the night or in whatever time of the day and is trying to be wise in spending his/her well-earned money, then go to a branch near your place!

Happy eating!

PR: PHILIPPINE OPERA COMPANY OPENS ITS 15TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY SEASON WITH THE RE-STAGING OF “ANG BAGONG HARANA”.

In the midst of so many foreign pop acts and musical productions from Broadway and the West End, one small theatrical effort made waves four years ago. It was a musical revue featuring traditional and contemporary Filipino songs, sung not by legends of Classical singing, but by a troupe of dedicated artists. The show was Philippine Opera Company’s “Ang Bagong Harana”.

In celebration of its 15th Year Anniversary Philippine Opera Company's bringing back "Ang Bagong Harana" this October. "Ang Bagong Harana" is very fitting to celebrate POC's Pearl Anniversary not only because it is one of POC's successful shows but also to promote that our heritage is our country’s best asset. “Ang Bagong Harana” will also remind us to put our country's future first especially in the coming election.

From children’s songs to tribal chants, from planting songs to courtship ditties, from stirring kundiman to the delightful showstoppers by Sylvia la Torre, “ANG BAGONG HARANA” will showcase the best of all the Filipino composers from different music genres --- Nicanor Abelardo, Ryan Cayabyab, Willy Cruz, Francisco Santiago, Antonio Molina, Resti Umali, George Canseco, Ernani Cuenco, Levi Celerio, Jose Estrella, Constancio De Guzman and Felipe de Leon, to name a few.

What was the secret of this small revue’s success?
“Ang Bagong Harana” was envisioned as love song to our country,” says Karla Gutierrez, who heads the Philippine Opera Company. ”We wanted to show audiences that there is so much wealth that modern Filipinos can mine from our traditional and contemporary music. In this age of globalization, it is all the more crucial for us to know who we are and what we have that we can call ‘Pinoy’. A lot of performers may say that we are the best in the world. But we wanted to go a step further and prove it by using our own traditional and contemporary material. And we wanted to showcase young singers who have committed themselves to classical singing and to our traditional material. And it was a show that had the audience who came to see it at the Carlos P. Romulo Theater at RCBC Plaza, weeping and applauding with joy.”

With all the warm response it generated, Philippine Opera Company was all the more convinced that there is a hungry audience for this ‘brand of entertainment’ that reconnects Filipinos to their souls. It’s the one thing we cannot face the future without.

And that is why we continue to show “Harana”, despite the seeming foolhardiness of doing a Pinoy Musical revue when every other Pinoy seems interested in listening to anything but his own traditional music. Not every Filipino feels a connection with their cultural heritage. Some may think traditions are old-fashioned and no longer relevant, and that they are unnecessary during these modern times. This is why we need to be exposed to our cultural heritage for only upon understanding our culture may we begin to value it.

Now, more than ever, we need to believe in ourselves. The songs that have served us well in the past will also serve as well as we go bravely into the future.

Why do we need to do “Harana”? We at Philippine Opera Company have chosen to do it because now more than ever, when globalization is the future of the world, we need to remind ourselves of who we are, where we are, where we have been, and what we held dear.

We stand ready to remind our countrymen if we wish to survive as Filipinos and protect our culture, our heritage is not a luxury or a cost, but a necessity.

The songs you will hear in “Harana” are our legacy and our best gift to the world. In singing them again, we say to the world, “This is who we are” … “This is our heritage”… “This is the cultural journey all Filipinos should take”.

“Ang Bagong Harana” features Karla Gutierrez, Cris Go, Lorraine Lisen, Melissa Camba, KL Dizon, Cristiani Rebada, Michael Odoemene, Noel Rayos, Lawrence Jatayna and Nazer Salcedo with the special participation of the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group.

Directed by Floy Quintos with music arrangements by four of the country’s most awarded arrangers Von de Guzman, Jessie Lasaten, Jesse Lucas and Paulo Zarate.

“Ang Bagong Harana” will run at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza on October 17 and 24 at 8pm and October 18, 23 and 25 at 3pm.

For ticket sales, please call Philippine Opera Company at 822-9609 or 0917-5272880 or TicketWorld at 891-9999 or Like Philippine Opera Company on Facebook.

It leaves an impact  kung baga.

·                                          *                                                          *

Music Review: Ginugunita Kita, A Story About Life

This is a collaborative work between Miclat – Lucas; the literary work of Maningning Miclat is then wedded to the creative music works of Jesse Lucas, and then brought to life by the singing voice of Banaue Miclat-Janssen.  This is an album that speaks in volume based on the composer and the writer alone!  Add to that the voice that gave life to this collaboration and what you have is an album that reaches out in time!

The people behind Ginugunita Kita

This 9 track album shows the life and mind of Maningning during her stay in this plane.  The arrangement per song is wonderfully made that it truly wove a spell of time and out of time.  The sense of time and the shared understanding between two composers is felt and heard between the rest and notes.  The piano and cello truly made a haunting impact in some pieces and a playful harmony in some.  Each piece tells you a bit of Maningning; her life, her pain, her joys and the way she sees the world in various stages of her life.

I how I wish Ang Naliligaw was a part of the album.  It is one song that showed the dilemma of Maningning on a playful note.  How she is lost but simply made the best of things by going back to where it all began.  I have some favorites in this 9-track album.  They are: Kulay sa Bagyo, Verses #2 and To Catch A Second And Turn It To Forever.

Kulay sa Bagyo showed a playful side of Maningning as interpreted by Jesse and Banaue.  It may be playful but there is a dark side to it as reflected by the stormy clouds.  Verses #2 is truly haunting.  I don’t know the poet but in this writing, I somehow understand her and what her deepest wish is.  Something that she hopes those who gets to read it will understand.  Somehow I understand her.  Somehow I know her pain, her wish and her freedom.  Somehow I understand that yearning . . . a yearning that we all have, if we are honest enough to face it.

To Catch A Second and Turn It To Forever is something that I will not forget, next to Verses #2, for the message strikes close to home.  If I could, I would and so will those who has experienced lost in their lives.  After seeing Banaue shed a tear during this song during the Aldaba presentation and afterwards hearing it clearly at the comfort of home after the CCP event, I then truly understand the beauty, the yearning, the desire and the sense of mortality and immortality of this song.  It is like a double-bladed sword, one side showing pain while the other side is showing beauty; it is like smiling with full of joy to someone but at the same time tears of sorrow rolls down your face - a truly fit ending piece in the Ginugunita Kita album.

Ginugunita Kita album was made available during the poetry awarding event by the Maningnig Miclat Art Foundation held at the Little Theater of the CCP.  For inquiries regarding the availability of the said album, you may possibly reach out to the foundation or to Artist Playground Inc via Facebook.
