Man as a Social Being (A Musing of a Free Thinker)

(Disclaimer:  This is not a talk or discussion made by a psychologist or even a sociologist for that matter.  This is simply a noted musing of an individual while doing his laundry.  Yes, laundry.)

“Man is a social being / animal/ individual / entity / specie.”  Whatever term used, bottom line is man lives and thrives with and for interaction with his fellow man in the basic sense.

With that said, man is known to be sociable despite the exemption on some individuals behaving differently.  Man will always interact in his own way with another individual or even to a specie that may be less in intellect for that matter.  How he interacts is simply a reflection of his communication skills derived from experiences, community, intellect and plain observation.

Some of you may ask as to what or where I am driving this musing to.  I also asked myself that same question when the seed of thought came through while doing your usual act of manual washing and I came to realized why it came about.  The cause of this line of thought is actually a musing on someone’s possible reaction(s) to a response made from a given answer.  Think of it as a query answered by another query.  Not the proper response you may say BUT it may be apt if there is a need of clarification or one is avoiding the direct and obvious way to response because s/he will be placed on a situation that s/he is not  in good light.

Man will react to a stimulus in ways he is comfortable or what he thinks is appropriate to the situation, especially if the stimuli is another individual with the same bodily functions even if the intellectual capacity and level is not of the same edge.  And even if the intellectual level is the same, there is still that factor of having the last or final say just to show his/her edge.  Why the opening thought, you may ask.  The reason behind that is - it is one general idea that reflects man and his interactions despite the numerous factors affecting or leading him/her to that reaction.  Since this is not a psychologist-therapist or a sociologist making the musing, I opted to simply keep it in the confines of plain individual (meaning mine) observation.  The challenge of being sociable is the number of possible doors of reaction that may open based on the stimulus presented. Reactions may be loud, subtle, calm, questioning, judgmental, haughty, elusive, with undertones, with understanding, with patience, irritation and stone-faced for that matter.  Then there is the matter of the answering response to the response given to the initial stimulus.  Still with me (I hope)?

Again, how one is geared to be sociable dictates his/her own way of reacting to any given situation.  The next question is, can you comprehend the possible factors that led to that resulting reaction?  If your answer is yes, then you are one VERY UNDERSTANDING individual.  In the vernacular, walang masamang tinapay para sa iyo.  You are the type who will and would be patient to all.  When I say all, I mean ALL.  If your answer is no, then that is not a fault or a mistake on your side unless things are fairly obvious and you just want to ignore one blaring truth.  Not understanding someone else’s reaction is not a fault and should not be an excused to put someone down . . .though . . .placing someone in his right level and social standing is excusable in some (NOT ALL) situations.

It is easy to accept things if one is understanding or at least made the effort to understand the given situation or scenario.  Now that is a very idealistic idea!  Let us be real.  Not everybody  have the time and energy to fully analyze things to be able to fully comprehend and reach an objectivity level that may lead to a type of reaction that is fair and square to all.  HELLO! Every square frame of your life event or scene is not a courtroom drama wherein you can ponder and analyze things in an even extended time.  You react instantaneously to things!  How you react is a quick processing of your mind to the stimulus, matched to that of your experience file + your training (at home, in school, with your community and even religion) + self-control.  That is the sociable man.

You might say, “I thought it is a communication skill.” (I did mention that on the opening part of this musing).  My response to that is . . . isn’t reacting a way to convey/ show/ express your thoughts to another party and isn’t that a form of communication?  (My claws are quite retracted while I was writing that line, just to let you know. Even my brow is relaxed and not arched in an intimidating way.)

Being a social being, one also has the luxury to simply observe scenarios and watch things unfurls / expose / unfold and even explode and simply learn from the different reactions displayed for viewing and ponder on the great “what if” to make things different.  I repeat, there are a good number of things affecting man’s way of reacting to any given stimulus.  Some reactions may be constant to a good number of individual. While some may slightly differ and there are those that may boggle your mind (may lead to brain stump.  I rather have brain freeze moments, thank you!).  Still it will show man’s need to be sociable and interacting.  I will leave you with one question as I end this musing of mine on this line of thought . . .

“If you get to understand the way how one interacts and demonstrate his social skills and needs would you expect them/others to understand you as your own social being?”

Bakit?

My Crepe Bites and Summer Kick Recipe

Here is the recipe that I made during the Taste Setter hands-on/competition event that was held today, April 24, 2018 at the Magsaysay Institute Center of Hospitality and Culinary Arts in Pioneer Woodlands, Mandaluyong.  It was a fun experience!  Hope you get to enjoy my creation too!

Crepe Bites:
For the crepe
2 eggs
1 cup flour
1 ½ Tbsp of Jiffs Crunchy Peanut Butter
1/8 cup sugar
2 Tbsp of Choco syrup
6 dashes of Tabasco Green Sauce
2 Tbsp of butter (unsalted)

For the crepe sauce
1/3 cup water
¼ cup sugar
Peanuts from the strained crepe
3 – 4 pcs of lychees slices
1/3 of an orange, juiced

1 banana sliced

PROCEDURE:
For the crepe
  • -          Beat eggs.
  • -          Add flour, peanut butter and sugar.
  • -          Mix till smooth.
  • -          Strain and keep the peanuts strained coming from the peanut butter.
  • -          Add Tabasco sauce and choco syrup.
  • -          Heat pan (12 or 14 inches in diameter)
  • -          Melt butter.
  • -        Pour in crepe batter and spread making a very thin crepe.  Don’t worry of tear at the sides for you are to trim it off later for presentation.
  • -       When you see air bubbles forming at a good part of the crepe, flip it over to cook the other side.
  • -          Remove from heat.
  • -          Repeat till all of the batter is cooked.
  • -          Set aside for assembly later.

For the sauce
  • -          In a sauce pan, heat water and sugar together and boil. Make sure that it is on medium heat and not high. You have to watch it to avoid burning later.
  • -          Once boiling, add the strained peanuts and continue stirring.
  • -          Add the sliced lychees and orange juice. Continue stirring.
  • -          When water is reduced and desired thickness is achieved, remove from heat and cool for about 5 minutes.

TO ASSEMBLE
  • -          Using another circular plate smaller from the formed crepe, trim the crepe of any breaks/tear.
  • -          Placed in banana slices and fold the crepe forming a half circle.
  • -          Repeat the process.  You will be able to make 4 folded crepes.
  • -          Pour the sauce on top of the crepes.
  • -          For added design and flavor, drizzle some chocolate syrup.
  • -          Serve and enjoy!

SUMMER KICK
This is my take of a cooler with a kick.  You will only need five (5) ingredients and a blender.

In a blender place in 1 cup of strawberry jam, ¼ cup apple juice, 1 Tbsp of peanut butter, ice and 10 dashes of Tabasco Habanero Sauce.  Blend till smooth.  Pour into a glass and decorate with mint leaves or trimmed pandan leaves.

Enjoy a cool refreshment with a heat kick seconds later.  A mocktail that is not a mocktail.

Enjoy!

I had fun doing this, hope you get to enjoy it too.  Do tell me how it taste for you. :-)

MY FIRST FUN-COOKING COMPETITION USING TABASCO!

Today was my very first fun cooking competition . . .it was my first cooking competition period.  It was fun!  Thank you Taste Setter-Tabasco for the experience!

April 24, 2018 was the Taste Setter event of Tabasco held at the Magsaysay Institute Center for Hospitality and Culinary Arts.  It was a two part event – a demo during the morning and a cook-off after lunch.  The demonstration was very interesting in terms of usage of the different Tabasco sauces available in the market and the rising food trends in the market.  Demonstration was made by Chef Ron who was candid and open to queries coming from all attendees.

With all the sauces introduced, the dishes simply showed the flavor effect of each sauce – flavor effect in terms of it as part of a marinated and seasoning in a dish, not just heat but also flavor.  You can choose from the Tabasco Original Red sauce, Tabasco Green Sauce, Tabasco Chipotle Sauce, Tabasco Habanero sauce and Tabasco Garlic Sauce – each has a distinct flavor and heat that you can play with your dishes and drinks to give it a new dimension.

Well this is about my cooking competition experience, so here goes.

I was somehow, the last one to start since I have no group to join and I was on my own to begin with.  There were five (5) groups already formed and discussing what they will prepare while I have to play catch-up for we were given an hour to prepare a dish and a drink using only the ingredients available and Tabasco sauce.  Mine was dessert and beverage.

I made the simplest dish that I could think of and that was a crepe with a matching drink based on some ingredients I planned to use in the crepe.  This was a fun competition to begin with.  Fun because it was just an application of what knowledge was imparted earlier and how playful can you get with flavors; competition because there was a trophy at stake. Hehehehe!

Thankful for the assistance that Richard Lacorte and some of the staff of MIHCA, because they became my arms and legs in getting some of the stuff that I need since everybody got what they need already and I have to make use of what was still available.  It was fun to cook again and let my brains work for that matter.  Imagine cooking for one plate only, no excess ingredients (less waste) and with what is available in terms of tools.  Challenge, yes!  Challenge accepted.

I was able to deliver without tasting what I made (stupid right?) but it was all for fun and simply enjoying the moment.  I named my dessert as Crepe Bites and my drink as Summer Kick (ingredients and procedure in my next post).  I know not what my ranking but I was happy to deliver something that has flavor and some texture in the dish that they were not expected to find. They like the caramel taste that I was able to produce in my sauce plus the added texture I gave my crepe sauce.  I like the kick that my drink has (love your creation).   True that I got kicked with the thickness of my crepe, still I got to analyze it now and know how to serve it better the next time.  For now, all that matters is the fun of making a dish.  Another take I got from this experience is the fact that I need to try things out first before presenting it to the public (test kitchen is a must!)

Again thank you TBDC for the invite and Taste Setter-Tabasco for the event!  I had fun and hope to join you again in your next Taste Setter event.

Fore! - Sillag 2018 Golf Tournament is On!

Fore!

Ping-pfft! (sound of golf balls being hit and set flying)

March 7, 2018, The Cliffs - the golf area of Thunderbird Resorts and Casino, goes into drive as people come in to be part of this year’s golf tournament.  Golf lovers, near and far, came in to Poro Point – San Fernando, La Union, to participate in the said tournament and enjoy the rest of the events set for the day as part of the annual light festival or more known as Sillag Festival.

The golf tournament is set into place by the Poro Point Management Council (PPMC) with The Big Difference Communications as media partner.  Along with it is the support of the Tourism Promotions Board under the helm of Director and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Cesar D. Montano and that of the Department of Tourism.   Sponsors of the event are as follow:  Mc Donald’s, Skin White Lotion, Chocovron, 8 Layers Technologies, Inc., Paul and Harris Cafe, Mc Ilhenny Co Brand Products – makers of Tabasco, Folgers, Cara Ole and Mega Creations.  Premium golf items are also up for grabs every raffle moment as the tournament progresses.

Set during the 2nd day of the 3-days festivities, the golf tournament is something of a tone-down but still energized event when compared to all the lights and fun fare activities for the day.  What set this apart is the subtle dynamic energy that you feel as the game develops.  As each player goes for a swing, you feel the excitement of hoping for a hole-in-one scenario or an impossible shot made possible at that time.  Fun and friendly competition is simply the theme for the day.

Sillag’s golf tournament is one of the looked out for event in the festival.  This year the expected number of players has increased.  Joining this year’s golf tournament are Vince and Patricia Hizon, Anthony Suntay, Garry Lim, Epi Quizon and Rocco Nacino just to name a few.  Same as the previous years, the golf tournament is expected to draw in watchers of the sport just to have a glimpse of known players and game development.

With the tee off set and putters, drivers and clubs all ready to be swung at a minute’s notice, we expect balls to fly true and far as the tournament progresses and a winner is declared.

Sunflower Kitchen, Patchi and Dash Cakes and Bloom Cakes with Bake Goodies Worthy of Your Taste

For the past month or so, I have been going to bazaars either as a participant help or a curious buyer and like anybody other there one gets to be drawn to some vendors because of its goods and the people behind it.

As a foodie, I get to encounter the same product all over again with no clear bite as to who edges who in that food category but every now and then there would be a vendor who will deliver what you expected and more.  Such was my experience with Sunflower Kitchen, Patchi and Dash Cakes and Bloom Cakes; they all gave you flavors that is true to the products name and even more.

Bloom Cakes

The very first thing that you would notice with their product is the container that held the cake.  It is a semi-brass colored can similar to that of an ice cream brand; unique already in that case.  The presentation can is actually a bake able tin, so there is no need to be an engineer to figure out how a round cake gets fitted in it without any damage in form and shape.  Next would be the design of the cake.  At the center of the cake is a rose candy that greets you with a strong “Hi!” because of the way it stands out or blend (such is the case of the black rose) from its dark background.  With three colors to choose from – red, white and black, it is up to you pick one based on your mood and intent of getting one.

Now for the taste description of the cake and why it made its note to my tongue.  Please note that I am not a chocolate fanatic and to appreciate one means there is something really palate worthy to it.

The cake is moist all through-out.  No dryness, everything was moist in all levels – from top to base.  Two things come to mind, the baking technique and the reason for that other flavor that tried to hide in the cake but still makes its presence felt – the wine.  Yes, there is wine in the cake.  It is a sweet red wine coming from the new wine making market and not your classic red’s.  The amount of the wine is quite controlled that you feel its “bite” but not the kick.

The ganache used to top the chocolate cake is made up of two types of chocolates namely dark and semi-sweet.  What made this noteworthy is the way you taste the two chocolate types despite its clean blending.  With that, the alcohol’s touch in the cake gets to be noted in the process thus making your chocolate eating a classic – chocolate and liquor working together.

Patchi and Dash Cakes

This is a partnership that resulted to something worthy in the market.  From cakes to small treats such as crinkles, Patchi and Dash Cakes has something that may capture your fancy.

I have tasted two of their creations that has high notes and something that may to your liking.  Their Banana Cake has the taste of true and ripe bananas to your liking.  Top with a light banana sauce and some chocolate bits and chips made this a perfect dessert but more as a coffee partner.  The cake is springy enough and moist with the banana sauce helping in maintaining the moistness of the cake also.  The chocolate bits gave it added taste character making it acceptable to non-fruit cake based liker’s and chocolate fans alike.

Their Dark Chocolate Cake is true to its name and nature.  It is moist and the flavor real that it is not bitter but quite enjoyable to eat.  This one truly made a stand to be either a dessert or a personal treat to oneself.  The sweetness level is just right and the ganache of the right consistency.

Sunflower Kitchen

Everything that they have is worthy of your palate!  Their items are all in snack packs making it the perfect buddy in your bag everyday or during your trips.  They have raisin cookies, baked pastillas, salted egg potato chips and my true love nougat bars.

Salted Egg Potato Chips

With the in-flock of salted egg potato chips in the market, Sunflower Kitchen remained true to what the name of the product should be and that is potato chips with true salted egg flavor and not just a sprinkle of that ingredient.  You taste the salted egg in every chip making every piece delectable.

Nougat bars

Nougat is love! For those who grew up during the 80’s, do you still remember that small white wrapped candy that is a bit chewy?  Do you remember the flavor of it?  Yes, I am talking about the nougat candy of old and that is how this brownie looking baked goodie tasted.  Real nougat goodness that is chewy and moist.  On the outside, one may think of it as a brownie with the nuts topping it but once you get to have a piece, you taste simply nougat through and through.  The sweetness is not strong making this a snack that you would enjoy.  You may not realize it but you may have finished the box already.  That is how good this bake goodie is!

CENTURIA MEDICAL MAKATI CELEBRATES WOMANHOOD BY GIVING VALUE TO HER HEALTH AND FUTURE

March was a month of celebration for women as the world celebrates with her thru the International Women’s Day recognition.  With various groups celebrating, Centuria Medical Makati opted to give her value – thru her health awareness and wealth management.

March 16 was the media day for the Health and Wealth Expo held at the lobby of the Centuria Medical Makati.  More than a week long celebration honoring womanhood and her value as an individual and to the society; Century Properties thru Centuria Medical – the latest health clinic/offices with cutting edge practitioners in various areas in the health field - opted to spread awareness and love to women by empowering them with the right knowledge of taking care of themselves and those of their love ones.

At the lobby of the said building, media and digital influencers, alll invited by The Big Difference Communications (TBDC) - member of the Public Relations Society of the Philippines duly recognized Tourism Board Philippines - flocked in to see, know and learn what is there for women.  Talks from participating clinics not only introduced their group and services but somehow addressed the basic concern of women in her physique, lifestyle and health.  Pinnacle Performance Philippines, came to front addressing the basic 3 A’s concern off women thru simply exercises that one can do at the comfort of their home – the Arms, Abs and Ass.  Pro-Health Sports and Spinal Physiotherapy gave focused on pre and post natal care and the possible source of basic body pain in women.

Giving talk regarding breast cancer check and treatment was spearheaded by the Asian Breast Center under the helm of Dr. Norman San Agustin, President and CEO of the prior mentioned company in Centuria Medical.  Lengthy it may be but it was informative in terms of new treatment procedures and early breast cancer detection.  Far from the practiced procedure here in the Philippines, the Asian Breast Cancer believes in breast conserving therapy – a move giving women inflicted with the disease a boost of confidence in terms of knowing that she is still whole as a woman after the treatment and an outlook of awareness of future possibilities due to correct assessment and diagnosis.

Other companies presenting that day were the Asian Square Dental, Taxumo, Philip’s and Angat Pilipinas – all explaining what services or product they have and the value it gives to lives of women and men alike.

The whole lobby of Centuria Medical Makati was filled with other participating companies, displaying their company profile and what they offer to people especially to women.  With the media day affair, comes with free sample services for attendees to try-out and experience what makes Centuria the best place to come to for some of their medical concern.  The place now houses several medical clinic services that an individual may need such as:  dental care, Ear-Nose-Throat and Hearing concerns, cosmetic surgery, chiropractic needs, aesthetic concerns, optical and breast cancer management just to name a few.

The celebration of Women started with the display of art works by a European artist/painter by the name of Jeanette Kamphuis.  Her paintings, depicting women form and silhouettes, were displayed at the lobby of the place and the derma floor weeks prior to the event, in hope to raise funds for her give-a-smile advocacy which is supported by clinics in the said medical building.  All proceeds goes to the said advocacy in hope to make not only women but also those with dental needs to be able to smile beautifully again.

Even after the media day and woman event, the services for women shall continue and holds true in both spirit and action in the medical center.  Truly, Centuria Medical Makati celebrated womanhood in all its form and value!
