MEGAWATT, All Charged Up to Deliver Food Goodness.

Located along N. Domingo St in Quezon City is a food place partnered with a car wash; not the same owners but they share a passion of giving quality service.  Welcome to MEGAWATT, a Tex-Mex themed food place with a special twist inside and out!

Owned and managed by the same partnership that has given you Red Baron, Megawatt is a place of its own despite the similar car wash + food area combination you see with the Red Baron.  It is the only place (as far as I know) in the metro that uses solar panels to give light to the restaurant (1st twist)! The general design of the place has an industrial feel which is echoed out to the outfits of the people working here.  The cups, plates and utensils used are all recyclable that they are eco-friendly, so to speak.  Capable of seating up to 25 customers, give and take, the place may be small but it is quite enjoyable to look at especially the collectibles on display that are being sold too (2nd twist).  One of the walls of the place is a huge display case that shows collectible and wearable items.  From action figurines to hero’s shirt, from shoes, watches and key chains, it is a delight to kids and kids at heart.

The food is a wonder also!  From burritos to pizza to chicken and burgers, they have something for everyone, young and old alike.  They have colas, beers, bottled juices and flavored teas but a must try when you visit the place is their homebrewed Blackcurrant Iced Tea.  It has that delightful blackcurrant flavor and the right sweetness level.  It is refreshing!  Priced at Php 88.00, and you have a tall glass to go with whatever you are having.  Next to this, and this is for the morning people and caffeine lovers, is their coffee drip.  It is actually 1st wave type of beans but what is beautiful with this cup is the flavor that you get as you get to finish your cup.  They offer brown sugar to go with your coffee, which I think is best to all types of dripped coffee for brown sugar gives you that right sweetness without covering the flavor of the coffee.  As you go down the cup, you get to have initially that coffee flavor then slowly a slight chocolate taste comes in as you finish it.  The brown sugar simply helps push the aroma, nothing more, keeping good coffee flavor.

The 3rd and not so final twist is with the food.

Earlier, I mentioned that it is Tex-Mex inspired but they went more than that.  The food that we have tried that day has some Asian flavors that somehow went well with the Tex-Mex food and that is due to the spices used on certain offerings.

The Chicks and Chips is something that you can order for 3 or 6, Php 268 and 499 respectively.  The chips are cooked right, not soggy, and the chicken has the appearance of something your grandmother made – but the comparison stops there.  The chicken is crispy on the outside, soft and juicy on the inside with the rub going into the meat making it flavorful even without a gravy or sauce.  They do have a good selection of condiments to use but why destroy a good flavor right? If you think using utensils are something of a bother with this offering, then make use of your hands!  Remember, chicken are best eaten with your hands.

Their burrito offering is not bad also.  What was offered to us that day were the Vegan Pesto (Php 185), Roast Beef (Php 245) and the 29Karat Surf & Turf (Php819).  I know what you are thinking, that the surf & turf is quite pricey.  In the vernacular expression: “Ano yan may ginto?” (Does it have gold?).  Sorry to pop your balloon darling but yes it has gold.  It has edible gold at the side.  With scallops, shrimps and squid, their 3S combination, paired off with good beef part, a creamy sauce and seasoned rice (it has a nice tangerine – salmon pink color, thanks to the spice used), this burrito is worth sharing and unless you have one big appetite then you have it for yourself alone.  What is the twist here?  That seasoned rice mixture has an Asian taste to it making this burrito their own and not a Mexican copy-cat.

(See that gold thingie at the forefront? That's the edible gold!)

Two of the burgers that were offered that day were the A.M.P. and the Crunchy Mushroom Melt.  Totally outside the borders of Mexico and inside the corals of Texas, I would say.  This is one comfort food that you would guard with knives out.  Each burger has components that I like and they are a runny yolk but cooked sunny side-up egg, mushrooms and cheese.  A.M.P. stands for Angus Megawatt Patty (Php255).  Served with a hash brown and a wonderfully cooked egg, this is one heavenly burger for me!  The patty is seasoned the Megawatt, the hash brown offers a textural dimension way and the buns are customized bread for them alone. There are two ways to eat A.M.P., (1) eat it the aristocrat way - with your utensils or (2) do it the real foodie way – with your bare hands. I absolutely love the way the yolk pours down that hash and patty; giving it another flavor as you take a bite, after bite, after bite.

Crunchy Mushroom Melt

The Crunchy Mushroom Melt is truly an American classic but what makes theirs different from the rest is that soft mozzarella cheese that is covered in a crunchy coating of its own.  The mushroom is cooked right and when that cheese starts oozing out after a bite or cut, then you are in for a challenge.  Either you eat fast or you act accordingly; I chose the latter.  Once the cheese starts oozing out, spread it out to the rest of the burger.  That way you still have that cheese goodness in every bite.

Megawatt has two typed of pizza based on dough type, the hand tossed or the crispy thin.  For the hand tossed type, we were offered the Seafood Garlic (Php318) which has their signature 3S (squid, scallops and shrimps) topping it.  Unfortunately for me, I have to seat this one out due to crustacean adverse reaction but the smell is delightful!  There is something sweet smelling in it that goes well with garlic scent and the cheese that makes this enticing.  For the crispy thin, we were offered the Cheese, Cheese, Cheese or something I would call Cheese x3 or Cheese³.  For cheese lovers like me, then be ready to sink your teeth in to this.  You will find your palate going through the different cheese flavors placed on top of that pizza and simply fall off into cheese bliss (Thank God and it is not yet cheese coma!)  The thinness of the crust was just right that even when it got cold, you still get to enjoy it based on flavors alone.

You get the industrial yet eco-friendly theme, the collectibles that are displayed and sold to interested customers, the food that is more than your average Tex-Mex, so what is the final twist? The final twist is not for you directly but if you are a respectable car owner, then you can have your car enjoy a wash treatment as you enjoy a thing or two in Megawatt.  Since they are located with a carwash service station (LG2 Auto station is the name), then why not treat your car to a service that it deserve as you treat yourself, right?

The display case of collectibles

Megawatt is located at 41-A N. Domingo St, halfway point of Robinson’s Magnolia and Gilmore.  It is at the left side and if you missed the signage, you will definitely not miss the looks of a car service place.  Word of caution: Not for the shopaholics!  The displayed items (collectibles) are truly something worth having.  The designs of the shirts on display are not of the common type and same can be said with the keychains.  The figurines are truly and definitely worth having if you are a true collector at heart.  You can still get a piece at a time, to make it easy on the wallet, every time you come and dine at Megawatt.  You get a visual treat from the display, a palate and tummy treat from the food being offered, a car service – if you have one, and a collector’s piece – if something catches your fancy.  No food place set-up can beat that, not even the big malls developers!
