Food Review: SATINKA-NATURALS, A Home for Vegan and Artist Alike

At the corner of Kamagong and Chino Roces Ave in Makati City is a place that is haven to artist, art lovers, vegan and food lovers, this is Satinka-Naturals.

At the left is a parlor, at the right is a bar type resto, across is a car place that has been there for more than a decade – you will definitely not miss Satinka-Naturals!  What looks like an all-brick feel on the outside is actually an all-wood atmosphere inside. The 2nd level is divided into bench and lounging style sitting arrangement.  This 2-storey establishment is cozy, rustic and has a homey feel.  “Something that we want to bring in the city,” states Schaller, real life and business partner of Satinka.

“A piece of the beauty from the mountains”

Satinka-Natural is a vegan-organic restaurant.  With roots coming from the north, they came to the city to give people a taste of how good and delightful organic food can be, no preservatives, no msg, no additives – simply good food served unto your plate.  Not only are they a restaurant but they also offer shampoos, mosquito repellents, aroma creations that are all natural.

This is also a place for artist.  They regularly have art exhibits and short shows that features poets, painters and musicians alike. This is no wonder since the owner is an artist also by heart and in lineage.

The Food:

What I like with this place is how they serve the food.  It is flavored right and each plate is colorful to begin with.  They serve foods that are visually stimulating and palate filling.  I did mention that they are a vegetarian/vegan restaurant, to those who wants a little meat they also offer some dishes that has chicken coming from an organic farm – no chemical feeds used to make those chicken grow healthy and plump.

What I like the best was their Greek Platter.  It is a mix of greens, olives, organic rice (red and brown), grilled chicken and goat cheese.  For the amount of Php 298.00, this is one hearty meal that can be shared because of the size of the serving.  The flavor of Greece is there, though not that strong but it is there.  The play of olives and the goat cheese is a delight!

The Parmesan Bechamel Sauce is also one dish that you should try.  It is made up of organic rice and butterfly cut chicken breast and surrounded by rich béchamel sauce.  The chicken breast is folded and in between are slices of red bell pepper and kesong puti and organic basil.  Topping it is a salad of zucchini strips that is like pasta.  The taste is good and so is the texture for the chicken is not dry and the sauce totally blends well with the rice and meat.

Brined Chicken Rosemary Adobo is one dish that you shouldn’t miss!  Cooked using amino soy sauce, apple cider vinegar and fresh rosemary, served with red mountain rice, this is one adobo recipe that is different and wonderful at the same time.  The flavor of the soy, cider vinegar and rosemary truly goes into the meat!  The meat is soft and really slides off the bones!  The way the rice matches the chicken is a marriage in the culinary field.

The Chicken Honey Mustard is delightfully sweet with a tang coming from the mustard sauce!  The chicken is breaded and fried right to a crisp, matched with a salad that totally balances of the whole dining experience.

Vegan Meatballs

Vegan Afritada

Vegan Platter

For those who are vegan/vegetarian, you must try out their Vegan Platter, Vegan Meatballs and Vegan Afritada!  Even if you are not, this three food offerings are a must try to complete your experience in Satinka-Natural.  The platter is made of vegan meatballs, vegetarian patty and vegetable salad.  The meatball is made out of beets while the patty is made out of eggplant.  To those who are not familiar of the taste of those vegetables that I have mentioned above, you might find it peculiar.  The beauty of this is the way it was prepared and seasoned.  The meatball looks like meatballs and doesn’t have that beet flavor that some people don’t like – plus it is gluten free.  The binder used is gluten free flour.  The afritada tasted like your normal afritada minus the meat.

Creamy Cheese Chicken

Grilled Chicken Pesto

They may have a short pasta selection but it is so worth it!  Their Grilled Chicken Pesto and Cream Cheese Chicken are both pasta dishes worth trying out.  The pesto is not your typical greasy pesto dish.  The balsamic reduction is so good!  The cream cheese sauce is also delightful!  For a cheese lover like me, I enjoyed sinking my fork into this dish.  The tomatoes in this dish is poached and matches well with the herbs.

There dessert selection is a must to close your dining experience!

Their Cheesecake-Sagada Style is truly something to talk and brag about!  It is smooth and creamy!  The sweetness comes from whatever fruit sauce is available and requested – available then was mango puree.  Now there is magic when you take this treat.  Eat it with mint leaves.  The mint elevates the flavor of the mango and the cheesecake to a new level.

Their Tiramisu is different from the regular tiramisu in the market.  It is nutty and smooth!  Best eaten while it is still cold!  If you want magic in this dish then make sure that when you take a fork full you have mint in it and then follow-up it with another fork-full without mint.  There is a change in flavor when you do these steps.  The mint flavor gives the nutty flavor of the dish an added kick and twist.

One thing that you must try is the coffee.  It is not your regular coffee served in a cup but rather in a coffee presser cup.  The flavor is rich in flavor (thickness) and mild in strength (caffeine level).  And you get to use muscovado sugar or a natural sweetener that is common in the north.  Did I mention that their coffee is grown from the mountains of Sagada?  That is why it is so good.  The reason as to why it is good is because the mountains of the north have the best temperature for coffee plants.  I love their coffee!

Satinka-Naturals is one place that you should visit and try out if you are in Makati.  Very soon, they would also offer delivery service in the Makati area.  You could also visit them at their table at the Legaspi Market every Sunday.

This is a two thumbs-up place for me!
