Food Review: KoCos - I See But Something Is Missing

Have you ever had a fusion meal that is not common?  A fusion because of the heat level of the food and not because of style and cooking technique?  If your answer is yes, then come and try out this new food place located at E. Rodriguez St. in Quezon City and make your own conclusion to their offerings.

KoCos is a Mexican –Korean inspired dining place that is set for relaxation, not just for casual dining.  With food offerings that is familiar to name and ingredients but never in one plate, KoCos is set to capture a market that is adventurous in food dining experience.  KoCos as a venue is a good place with a smoking, non-smoking and booths that you can use as you dine.  They even have a screen that shows videos and karaoke tracks for you to enjoy; you might as well sing along.

In terms of their food offerings, I see the fusion in terms of ingredient usage in a dish but not in the cooking technique (unfortunately).  Some of the dishes were good while some needs further testing in the kitchen.  Why do I say this?  There were 3 dishes served for us (I was one of the 10 invited bloggers) that taste the same.  Flavors are the same but the presentation is different.  I thought my taste buds were going awry then but another guest has a similar experience when I mentioned that scenario to the owner.

Here is my top pick:

Pumpkin Soup – it has the right level of salt and pepper.  The vegetable used has a buttery taste that is not overpowering (can be from the vegetable or added in when it was being made).  The noteworthy thing in this dish is that underlying flavor that you get every time you take a spoonful of it.  Not everybody will get to taste that flavor for it is so subtle!  For those of the critic level, you would definitely taste it and rack your mind as to what that flavor.  It is not a bad flavor.  It is a subtle interesting flavor in that cup besides the normal pumpkin.  Another plus thing about this soup is that it is still smooth in texture even when cold.

The rest, unfortunately have a component challenge somehow.  It is good in terms of taste but somewhere, somehow something went wrong in the preparation that made it to the flunkie category.  Let me just site some samples so that you will understand.

The R&B Slider Burger – The flavor of the patty is good.  The vegetables were crispy and gave off a nice complimentary color to the dish.  The downside of it is the bun.  It was dry, to the point that it was near crunchy.  I looked in to their menu to see the description and mistook it for their other slider entry.  When I read the right entry, I was disappointed because it said that the bun should be pillow soft.  Well it was not soft.  The good side, the potato shoestring fries that comes with it was good and crunchy.

Their Nachos have a good flavor bite in terms of the onions used.  It gave that needed flavor that is so Mexican in taste.  The challenge with this dish is the shredded meat.  It was dry and chunky.   I like the concept but the preparation went wrong somewhere.

Last to mention and I feel bad for this dish because of the dripping meat juice that comes out of it whenever you try to take a bite is their version of a Taco.  The flavors are there and it is good.  I have encountered a dish similar to it but it wasn’t as messy as this; they also made use of soft shell taco.  The proper way to serve this, change the presentation.

Right now, I see the potential in this place.  A little adjustment here and there and they would truly capture foodies all around the metro and even beyond.  Try to place your items back in the test kitchen and see how you can improve it.

Here are some of their offerings:

Beef Stew - I get what they were trying to present
and I like it but a little stewing of vegetables won''t hurt the dish

Meatballs - pure heart

Seafood Arroz - can't taste this but the fragrance is good.

KoCos Surfries - definitely good for sharing

KoCos Fried Chicken (KFC) - flavors please
