Moymoy Lulumboy: Ang Batang Aswang – My Book Launch Experience

Who would have thought that a book launch would be a note worthy experience?  When I signed-up to attend for this event, all I was thinking was the nature of the book.  It has a catchy title and I was interested to know what the book is all about.

Come the date, I was at the venue area and like any blogger, started taking pictures of the book displayed.  Initially, I planned to open my copy at home but opportunity knocked and I have to open it right there and then.  I mean the author, Mr. Segundo Matias Jr., was seated a row behind me and some people were already asking for his autograph, plus the book artist Mr. Jomike Tejido was literally seated behind me so why won’t I do the same right?

Ms Gay Castro and Mr Toots Tolentino

Once the program started, hosted by Ms. Gay Castro and publicist Mr. Toots Tolentino, we were initially treated to a video presentation as to what Lampara Books is all about, the publishing house responsible to the printing of Moymoy Lulumboy: Ang Batang Aswang.

About Lampara Books:

“NURTURING the mind while still young. Child development and values formation made enjoyable and interesting to kids with coloring, reading, drawing, writing, reasoning, storytelling and craft activities”.
Lampara-Easy to Learn Books—fully illustrated children’s story and work-activity books with an array of enjoyable learning exercises.
EASY TO LEARN BOOKS came into being in 1997 when co-publishers Segundo “Jun” Matias, Jr. and Richard Reynante, who founded Precious Pages Corporation (PPC), decided to diversify from publishing popular literature (Tagalog romance pocketbooks).
Having established PPC in 1992 and after gaining success in the publication of romance pocketbooks in the next five years, Jun and Richard naturally looked into another area of the print media—that is, children’s books. Richard used to headwrite several children’s shows for ABS-CBN Channel 2.
The first book, Connect the Dots and Color, was submitted for evaluation by a walk-in artist, one of the few who heeded Jun’s call for the need for concepts for activity books that catered to preschool children.
The favorable response to the book in terms of sales and feedback prompted Jun and Richard to further explore the field, doing researches and making studies that would make feasible the total commitment to publishing children’s books. This was at the time when local publishing firms were publishing children’s books on a limited basis; most children’s books were being imported by local distributors and outlets—naturally, these books catered only to the needs of the elite.
Inspired to contribute what they can to the industry, Jun and Richard set up, within PPC, a core editorial staff to man the growing production of its book imprint Easy to Learn Books. Once this was solidified, Lampara Publishing House, Inc. (LPHI) was founded, becoming the sister company of PPC.
Under LPHI, the book imprint Lampara Books was established, aimed to bring not only to children but also to parents, teachers and caregivers stories from the current harvest of children’s literature in the country. Stories by award winning writers—written in two languages, Filipino and English, to reach a greater number of readers here in the Philippines and in other parts of the world—illustrated in full colors, have been featured in the book imprint.
In 2000, Jun and Richard attended the Singapore International Book Festival, the first of a series of international book festivals and fairs they started attending annually. Ensuing trips to such festivals/fairs to the US; Frankfurt, Germany; Tokyo, Japan; Taipeh, Taiwan; and Bologna, Italy helped galvanize the company’s commitment to publishing children’s books.
The eventual participation of Lampara Books and Easy to Learn Books in these foreign book festivals paved the way for the acquisition of rights by foreign book distributors to a number of titles published by the company. Wins Holland, a book manufacturer-distributor in Belgium, acquired the rights to the titles of a number of Easy to Learn books that were translated into Dutch and Portuguese for the European and Brazilian markets. Likewise, the rights to a number of titles from the Lampara Books imprint were acquired by a Singaporean book distributor and translated into Mandarin, Tamil, Malay and Bahasa Indonesia for the Southeast Asian market.
In the home front, in their bid to make children’s books more accessible for the local market, Lampara Books-Easy to Learn Books also started the importation of children’s books as well as the acquisition of rights to books from other countries for distribution. In 2003, the company began acquiring the rights to conceptualize, write, produce and distribute books on popular characters, including Dora the Explorer, Blue’s Clues, Winnie the Pooh, Barney, Disney Princess, Barbie, Marvel Superheroes, The Lion King and Toy Story.
With more than 10 years in the business, Lampara Publishing House, Inc. is slowly but surely forging its way into the global market. Proof of this is the birth, in 2005, of Easy to Learn Sydney—ETL Sydney—a business branch of the company in Australia, the first in a planned establishment of business branches of the company in strategic locations.
Today, what used to be a mere “children’s department” at the PPC office has become a full-fledged publishing company of not only children’s books but children’s learning aids and paraphernalia as well. The company’s editorial unit, through its core staff, now manages a stable of freelance contributors from the academe—child psychologists, preschool teachers, experienced child caregivers, MassCom students and graduates as well as professional and beginning writers.
LPHI is a member of Books Exporter of the Philippines, Book Development Association of the Philippines, Inc., National Book Development Board, & The Manila International Book Fair.

MISSION AND VISION
To manufacture and provide the basic tools and materials, both interactive and activity-based, needed in the introduction of early academic learning to children.

Back to the book launch.

What makes this event different from other book launches is the fact of as to how the book was introduced to the people.  Instead of simply talking about the book, Lampara along with PETA, has tapped a school-based performing group (FEU Theater Guild) to help present the book in a new manner.

The launch was both a visual and an auditory treat!

Dialogues used were actual lines from the first chapter of the book, movements were applied to give added dimension to what is being said and the music created gave it depth.  The accompanying video, like the piped edging of a cake, was simply an added treat to the whole presentation.  It was eerie and fascinating!

I love the shirts used by the performers!  The print design was the actual illustration used in the book to describe the people of Gabun. How I envy them for having a one of a kind shirt!

After the presentation was a short interview portion with the author and the illustrator of the book.  Questions about the book were thrown in by the invited people from the media, press and bloggers alike.  After which, a line was formed for the actual book signing and picture taking.

My thoughts about the book:

Written in Filipino, the book is actually good for young adults and book lovers alike.  I have finished reading the book and would say that it is a light reading material for those of my age.  Though there were some hanging questions about some scenes and characters, the story was neatly wrapped making it cohesive and the lessons written within is clearly stated.

As mentioned during the launch, there are indeed some hanging questions left and it may lead to new books tying everything up; something to look forward to in the years and months to come.

What made this book good were the properly placed illustrations and the visual design given to all the characters of the book.  It is so child friendly and unbounded by time! As mentioned by the illustrator, Jomike Tejido, he based the design on some RPG games and his imagination – making it at par to the taste of the youth of today.

Another thing worth mentioning about this book were the lessons that the author wishes to impart to his readers and target market.  The book is not simply about heroism but also the importance of family; the love and value of being part of a family; the pain of losing one and most of all the importance of acceptance.

For me, this is one book worth giving to a kid, a family member, a love one or even to oneself.
It is good as a birthday gift, a Christmas gift or simply a Thank You gift to a friend.  Go and get a copy now!  It is already made available in your local bookstore (here in the Philippines that is).  Get a copy and know that you are not only spreading good lessons to live on but also you are supporting the local industry (publishers, writers and illustrators).

Enjoy reading!

Giselle - A Ballet About Love Till the Afterlife

Normally when we talk about classic tragedy love stories, it will always end in tragedy.  Like Romeo and Juliet, The Little Mermaid, and The Hunchback of Notredame, they all ended up with the lead character dying or dead.  With Giselle, it may have the same element to a point but what makes it different is the essence of love that went beyond from the grave so to speak.

Part of the Blue Moon Series this September of the Ballet Philippines, who is currently celebrating its 45th Anniversary this year, they opened the whole series with the performance of Giselle last September 19, 2014.

Despite the weather condition at that time, I braved the typhoon to watch the said ballet at the Cultural Center of the Philippines – Main Theater (Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo).  Initially dressed for the worse weather situation, gala outfit was packed well in my bag, I travelled from San Pedro Laguna to Manila hoping to reach the venue in a semi-dry state.  And I did!  I arrived at the CCP with ample time to change into my gala outfit (satin shirt and malong) and enjoy the view of people coming in to give their support to Ballet Philippines.

Initially, the performance that night was set to be accompanied with the live performance of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra but because of the weather conditions, it was not to be so.  Even if that was the case, people still came in to give their support and enjoy the ballet.

The performance that night was made special for three (3) reasons: (1) It was the start of the Blue Moon Series; (2) it was a fund-raising event to help our local ballet dancers; and (3) it showed the long history of good relationship between Ballet Philippines and the American Ballet Theater – performing that night were American Ballet Theater Soloist Stella Abrera and Principal Dancer James Whiteside as Giselle and Albrecht respectively.

The Ballet:

Giselle is a two-act ballet that calls for both the technical and artistic prowess of a dancer.  May you be the main dancer or part of the chorus, it doesn’t matter for every dance piece demands your best when you hit the stage.

It is a love story that tells about the different phases that a girl goes to when it comes to love; the falling into, the hurt, the betrayal and the acceptance.  What makes it different is the element of love being depicted beyond death.  As mentioned by Stella Abrera during the press preview event of the Blue Moon Series: “There is a Giselle is all girls.”

“Touted as one if ballet’s greatest, is a classical romantic tragedy of loss, forgiveness and love beyond death.  Her story is a familiar one – two men are in love with her, but she chooses to surrender her heart to Albrecht, the suave newcomer who, as Giselle later finds out , is engaged to be married.

Ignoring her suspicions and the well-meaning advice of Hilarion, her other suitor, Giselle eventually discovers the truth and ultimately, her heartbreak results in her demise.  Yet she chooses to forgive her lover and save his life.”
Except of press release provided by Mr. Toots Tolentino

The performance:

The 1st Act was the introduction of all the “living” characters of the ballet.  How Giselle and Albrecht fell in love, their courtship, the joy of the people with their union, the jealousy of Hilarion that led to the betrayal of Albrecht to Giselle’s love and her death.  The 1st Act was a display of the male dancers (chorus) prowess on stage.  It was also the key to understand the depth of the 2nd Act.

The 2nd Act tells the story of Giselle’s love that goes beyond death.  It also shows the demise of Hilarion, the price he has to pay for his jealousy, and the love of Albrecht asking for forgiveness.  If the 1st Act was showing the prowess of the male dancers, the 2nd Act was 80% girl power.  Here you would see the female chorus dancers giving their all, Giselle’s full dance pieces, Queen Myrthe’s stage moments and Albrecht’s woe.  In the 2nd Act, you would see the love of Giselle for Albrecht as she saves him from the hands of Queen Myrthe of the Willis.

Stella Abrera, as Giselle, was a delight to see on stage.  She is a slim tall dancer compared to some of the company dancers of BP but she was able to project that image of a young girl in love.  You can see in her Giselle as a young girl in her teens being in love believing that it is truly true love.  She knows how to own and share the stage.  She shines during her solos, her pas de deux with Albrecht and even with the company.  She is one dancer who dances not only to show what she is capable of on stage but also for the people watching her and people she is with onstage.

Her body length is a huge advantage when she does her arabesque and pas de deux.  Her jumps were exquisite for she has control and consciousness on her landings.  Her arches showed her control and strength. She is something to behold on stage.

A phrase to describe James Whiteside is controlled energy.  His jumps and landings were something to behold and hear!  Why hear? It was basically noiseless!  Being a frustrated dancer myself, I used to dance – interpretative dancing and jazz is my forte, one thing that my previous coach always tells me is to make sure that there won’t be any sound when you make your landing.  Something that my theater acting coaches also tells me – when you walk on stage, make sure that you don’t stomped or make that thumping sound on a wooden floor.  Something that I apply whenever I am onstage before. He, James Whiteside, has it down pat.

He knows when to take the light and share it with his co-dancers.  The way he dances on stage shows his joy and enjoyment in what he does.  Though not much in facial expression but his body movement displayed his emotion and message loud and clear.

Rita Winder is also a wonder to behold!  Doing the role of Queen Myrthe of the Willis, Rita showed her prowess as a dancer in both form and projection.  No wonder she was recognized as the Female Featured Performance in a Classical Dance in the 2013 Gawad Buhay by Philstage.  To describe her character (Queen Myrthe) would be someone who is cold, distant and authoritative all at the same time but capable of reaching out the viewers; something that she is capable of doing when she is on stage.  Even with the corps de ballet on stage, she stands out!  Her presence is felt!

The female dancers (chorus), were something to watch also for they were all in-sync in their movements.  A little more control, in terms of landing – for you get to hear not just the sound of the wood part of the ballet shoes when they land, but their gliding was a beauty to witness.  They literally floated on stage like a spirit, as their role demands.

As a whole, this was a performance worthy not only of my time but also the experience! It was worth braving the typhoon.

The opening of the whole Blue Moon Series couldn’t have been made any better with the performance that night of the Ballet Philippines.  Not only is Giselle a ballet piece that is truly considered a classic but the message it gives breaks boundaries.  Kudos to the whole company, Ballet Philippines, and to both Stella Abrera and James Whiteside!  This was a performance worthy to be part of their Sapphire Season!

Movie Review: MAZE RUNNER

The Maze Runner is a 2014 American science fiction action thriller film directed by Wes Ball, based on James Dashner's 2009 book of the same name. The film is the first installment in The Maze Runner film series and was produced by Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen, and Lee Stollman with a screenplay by Noah Oppenheim, Grant Pierce Myers and T.S. Nowlin. The film stars Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario,Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Ki Hong Lee and Will Poulter.
The story follows sixteen-year-old Thomas, portrayed by O'Brien, who awakens in a rusty elevator with no memory of who he is, only to learn he's been delivered to the middle of an intricate maze, along with a slew of other boys, who have been trying to find their way out of the ever-changing labyrinth — all while establishing a functioning society in what they call The Glade. Principal photography began in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on May 13, 2013 and officially concluded on July 12, 2013.
The Maze Runner was released on September 19, 2014 in the United States by 20th Century Fox. The film received mainly positive critical reviews, with praise aimed at the cast's performances as well as the film's intriguing premise and refreshingly dark tone. The film was also a commercial success, as it topped the box-office during its opening weekend with a $32.5 million debut, making it the sixth-highest grossing debut in September. A sequel, The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, is set be released on September 18, 2015 in the United States.

Movie Review:
The beauty of reviewing this film is that I haven't read the book.  This was a plain movie enjoyment without the book's point of view.
The actors were good in terms of their role portrayals.  Since the  film called for males to be in their teens, the actors were good to reflect that in terms of their acting and style of delivering dialogues.  My only concern is this character who has been in The Glade for a time by the name of Chuck.  He is still plump!  Ok, he has been in the glade for a month but still, he should have lost some weight with all the clean-up he needs to do on a daily basis (1).
What happened to the beast that was in a cage that Thomas saw while he was in the metal lift? (2)
The Grievers are another thing.  It is a bio-engineered creature.  It is like a mite with a mechanical tail. It was created well for my taste.  A little peculiar in looks but that is something to be expected with a bio-engineered creature.
Being a Mass Communication graduate, there is always a reason as to why one has to make use of a particular shot or angle.  It could be simply for symbolism or to show the point of view of a character but in this film, I don't see the value of having a shot where the lights were coming from behind a person since the scenario can be taken in a different angle (3).  It could be simply to make the viewers see what the prime character is seeing but like what I have mentioned, it could be done in another angle.

I also don't understand as to why for 3 years, they really haven't mapped out the outer rim of the maze.  They were able to mapped-out part of it but beyond the markings no more.  They know that it opens for a time and could have explored it further but it took that part of a Griever to guide them to that part (4).  It is either they were afraid to go further because of the time element but based on the film, they could have gone further with enough time to go back. If you will see the image provided, you would notice that it is incomplete.
What happened to the dead bodies when the Grievers attacked the Glade (5)? There were no burial grounds made or even funeral pyres for that matter.
Despite the things that I have pointed out above, the storyline was developed well that you get to have the feeling that there is more to come, which I like.  Like what I said, I haven't read the book but this film (similar to Divergent) gives you that desire to wait for the next part and see how things develop.  The pacing set of by the film is good that it keeps you looking forward as to what is to happen. Humor was added into it through the way the dialogues were delivered.
What is good with this film are the values that were presented through out the story.  Loyalty, trust, courage and hope.  Values that are either presented differently in some films but was shown clearly (for me) in the film.  Would I recommend this film?  YES!  It is one film series to look out for and watch.

PR: BLUE MOON GALA ALL SET ON SEPTEMBER 26 AND 27

Ballet Philippines, the country’s premier classical and contemporary dance company proudly announces the BLUE MOON GALA set on September 26 – 27, 2014 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines - Tanghalang Nicanor  Abelardo (Main Theater).

THE BLUE MOON GALA shall feature BP’s favorite masterworks and other acclaimed award-winning works in line with the company’s sapphire milestone.

The dances to be featured are as follows:

JE TU ELLE (Choreographed by Redha Benteifour; Music by Vangelis)
The dance features five sensuously sinewy assertive women. It strikes with its sensual, bravura movements. In this dance, a contemporary view of women’s sinuous strength and arrogance underneath the exterior of gentleness, women proclaim they are the stronger sex.

FARANDOLE (Choreographed by George Birkadze; Music by Georges Bizet)
This neo-classical piece set to music of Bizet showcases the dancers’ athleticism and bravura with a slightly Spanish flair that echoes the Filipino’s hispantic history and tradition.

SALOME (Choreographed by Agnes Locsin; Music by Isaac Albeniz)
This piece features guest artist Kris-Belle Paclibar as Salome, sweetheart of Elias, is left alone in her grief and passion as Elias leaves her to join the revolutionary forces against Spain. She expresses a woman’s resigned anguish over Elias’ choice of a higher love – the duty to defend one’s country so that future generations may live and even love more freely.

COLD SONG (Choreographed by Max Luna III; Music by Klaus Nomi)
The choreographer’s tribute to Alvin Ailey, whom he danced and worked with as a member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Luna is a former artistic director of Ballet Philippines.

BUNGKOS SUITE (Choreographed by Alice Reyes; Music by Velarde- Obispo (Dahil Sa Iyo), Kasilag (Chitchiritchit), Kasilag-Velasco (Dandansoy), Paguio (Manang Biday), Obispo (Telebong)
A collection of traditional and popular folk songs reflecting various moods but especially highlighting the playfulness, amorousness and sense of humor of the Filipino.

NOCTURNE (Choreographed by Carlo Pacis, Music by Felix Mendelssohn)
The final duet from A Midsummer Night’s Dream showcases the reconciliation of Titania and Oberon as imagined by Hong Kong- based Flipino choreographer, Carlo Pacis. The production won a lion’s share of awards at the 2013 Phil¬stage’s Gawad Buhay! Awards including Outstanding Modern Dance Production and Outstanding Choreography.

R/J (Choreographed by George Birkadze; Music by Dmitri Shostakovich)
“R/J" condenses the ubiquitous Romeo and Juliet love story in a 7-minute pas de deux, which ends right before the moment Juliet awakens from her drug-induced slumber.

FOR THE GODS (Choreographed by Denisa Reyes; Music by Fabian Obispo)
Inspired by the ‘Dugso‘ folkdance from Bukidnon, this modern workTribal women celebrate the age-old rites of birth and sacrifice in this passionate affirmation of the timeless female principle of life.

DON QUIXOTE GRAND PAS DE DEUX (Music by Ludwig Minkus)
Former Ballet Philippines principal dancer Candice Adea and her partner Shen Jie, both currently soloists of Hong Kong Ballet perform one of the most challenging duets in the classical repertoire. Taken from Miguel Cervantes’ classic story about the adventures of the chivalrous Don Quixote and his sidekick Sancho Panza, the Don Quixote Grand Pas de Deux is better known as the wedding celebration of Basilio and Kitri in the ballet’s third and final act.

SONGS OF THE WAYFARER (Choreographed by Norman Walker; Music by Gustav Mahler)
This is the second major work that Norman Walker created especially for the company. He drew his inspiration from the composer's own experience as a young man, of a totally unrequited love. In his grief, he composed the bittersweet song-cycle used in the ballet. We follow the hero brooding while his love is being wed, out into the fields that bring him no comfort but only show him his love's likeness wherever he looks. The tormented hero leaves the town in the dead of night and spends it under a linden tree, where sleep makes all well again. Critical and popular acclaim has made this work a piece de resistance in the company's repertoire.

As a special treat for balletomanes, the repertoire for the matinee show  will feature selected works of the Ballet Philippines show “MASTER PIECES”  that will tour around the United States and Canada in October.
The works include:

AKU (Choreographed by Alden Lugnasin; Music by Jessie Lucas)
This is a technique piece to test man’s physical limits and possibilities in body movements. This dance was heralded at the 9th Concours International De Danse de Paris in France in December 2000. Described as different and beautiful, it showcases the dancers’ unique understanding of the contemporary Filipino dance style.

HALIK (Choreographed by Paul Alexander Morales; Music by Jed Balsamo)
This dance excerpt from Ballet Philippines’ 41st Season production Crisostomo Ibarra, a dance retelling of a seminal novel Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) authored by Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. Managing to escape prison with the help of Elias, Ibarra visits Maria Clara to give his forgiveness and to say goodbye. She tells him the truth about her real father again asking Ibarra for his forgiveness. Finally he understands. They embrace each other and kiss.

AFTER WHOM (Choreographed by Augustus “Bam” Damian III; Music by Jerrold Tarog)
After Whom is a bold showcase for BP’s dynamism and bravado. It highlights the company’s prowess in the modern, contemporary and neo-classical genres.

MORIONES (Choreographed by Agnes Locsin)
Inspired by the Moriones Festival of Marinduque, Locsin’s Moriones was choreographed for Ballet Philippines II’s participation at the Recontres Festival Du Danse in La Baule, France. It was also a study for movement for the Guardias Civil dance for the modern ballet “Encantada”.

TAMBOL AT PADYAK (Choreographed by Tony Fabella; Music by Samuel Asuncion, Malek Lopez, and Pinikpikan)
Set to local beats, global beats and heartbeats, this award-winning and audience-rousing work is full of youthful energy which mirrors the Filipinos’ joy of living.  This showstopper, utilizing the local “bakya” (wooden slippers) to amplify its rich rhythm, has wowed adults and children, foreigners and expatriates ever since it premiered at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
